Nailing Or Screwing Drywall - House Building Tips

Nails versus screws who will become the winner. When drywall first came out the installers used everything from regular steel nails to galvanized roofing nails. After a short amount of time they started to develop major problems from nails popping out of the finished drywall.

Nail popping results when the nail is driven into moist lumber and as the lumber shrinks the house settles and nail can actually pop out to the walls. Hard to imagine the nail could actually pop out of the drywall as the wood was drying out.

How far the nail would actually pop out was determined by how far it was driven in to the framing studs or ceiling joists. Well pretty soon drywall installers started to use ring shank nails to eliminate this problem. This worked great but these nails were hard to drive in and would often break.

As time went on the nails improved and were made out of galvanized metal with cupped shaped heads and came in a few different sizes. The size of the nail used was determined by the thickness of the drywall. These new nails worked great and had good holding power and eliminated a lot of nail popping.

Using nails means driving them in with a hammer. If you miss the nail you damage the drywall. This seemed to be a big problem and was virtually eliminated with the screws.

Well pretty soon people started using screws which had greater holding power and pretty much nail popping. Another advantage to using screws over nails is the simple fact you need less screws than you do nails to attach the drywall to the metal or wood framing.

This means less labor installing and finishing the drywall.

There is one problem with the screws and that is they have to be set perfectly. They can not break the paper surface on the drywall but have to be set enough into the drywall so that it can be finished properly. Most screw guns have an adjustable setting used to get just the right depth for the screws installed in the drywall. But this also was a problem when screwing into a hard piece of wood you can actually snapped the screw head off, strip the screw head or break the screw.

Nails on the other hand can bend while driving them into a hard surface.

Who wins the nails versus screws while installing drywall? I have got to give it to the screws. That doesn't mean the nails just got screwed or the screws just got nailed.

I couldn't resist. I actually preferred the screws over the nails except for when nailing the drywall corner bead on. Some drywall professionals use nails to hang the drywall and go back with a screw gun and some screws to finish the job. The nails sometimes seem handier than the screws when installing the drywall.

Enchanted Islands - Architecture of Santorini Greece

Pirates were always a fear for the inhabitants of Santorini Greece. For this reason, they built their houses on sites far from the sea and high on the cliffs.

Santorini villages are very similar to other villages of the Cycladic islands. The villages feature beautiful small white houses in narrow paved streets. This type of building homes was for several reasons:

A restricted number of safe spaces to build and dwell

Protection from the wind in winter and solar heat in the summer

Construction materials were scarce

Strong communal spirit

Security

In modern Santorini Greece you will find settlements have appeared near the sea in areas such as Kamari and Perissa, however, these settlements seem to have lost all the elements of the traditional architecture.

You can still find the traditional architecture of Santorini Greece in the villages of:

Fira: One of the most fascinating in architectural design perched on top of a cliff having thousands of steps throughout the village. The village of Fira is considered as one of the most famous or popular villages. It is also the capital.

Oia: Considered to be another famous and beautiful village in Santorini

Imerovigli

Megalohori

All the traditional villages of Santorini Greece have various mansions with beautiful marble doors. Sanotorini Greece in general is known to have some of the most beautiful villages in all the country of Greece.

Santorini Greece is probably known best by its picturesque white painted villages on top of these impressive high cliffs. There are usually blue doors and windows divided by narrow streets. Widespread wine making on the island is revealed by the many houses that have their own tank installed to crush the grapes. Many of these picturesque houses have been restored and made into beautiful villas. The cubic and circle shapes create beautiful shadows throughout the villages of Santorini Greece.

There are still some wonderful examples of days gone by architecture on the island; however, the architecture today is not always uniform. Some areas, such as the main street in the town of Akrotiri and the village of Kamari feature more nontraditional examples. Here you will find the Akrotiri lighthouse and the Archondiko Argyrou Mansion.

Another interesting aspect of their architecture is the cave-like structures that helped to keep an average temperature during the entire year. Many houses had these structures because of the volcanic history and terrain of Santorini.

Churches

The churches of Santorini are very interesting works of architecture. There are hundreds of churches and chapels in all different sizes, shapes, colors and religious beliefs. Some of these churches have become a trademark for Greece.

There is so much more to say about the distinct architecture in Santorini Greece. This article briefly describes a few areas. For more information about Santorini Greece follow the URL address in resource box to Enchanted Islands web site.

Going "Green" in Your Home

As our society gets more conscious of our impact on the environment, many consumers are concerned about "living green". And while it's important to worry about what we drive, and what we eat, and what we spray into the air, one of the biggest impacts on our planet often goes overlooked - our homes. A house require a great deal of natural resources to be built and large amounts of energy to keep maintained. Many new home builders are building homes specifically designed to have a smaller environmental "footprint", but there are things that everyone can do in their homes to help save the planet.

1. Harness the Power of the Sun - Lower your energy bills and help the environment by looking into the possibility of using solar power to help power your home. Many states offer varying types of incentives to install solar panels. Even with incentives, the upfront investment can be a little pricey, but you're guaranteed to make your money back eventually in the savings on your utility bills.

2. Energy Efficient Appliances - Many companies that manufacture home appliances now have energy-efficient models. Next time you decide to remodel your kitchen, consider switching to these models.

3. Insulation - Improper insulation can be one of the biggest contributors to wasteful energy in your home. By ensuring that your home is properly insulated, you increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling units and reduce the amount of energy (and money) required to run them.

4. Planting the Seeds - It may sound simple or hokey, but one of the easiest and most effective ways to help your environment is to plant trees. Not only will you be contributing to clean air and making the world a more beautiful place, but trees will also provide shade to your home during the hot summer months, making it easier and somewhat cheaper to keep cool. And when you're ready to sell, the boost to your curb appeal that comes from a beautiful yard doesn't hurt either.

5. Avoiding pesticides - There are many types of pesticides on the market that are not only harmful to the environment, but also to you and your pets, due to the toxic compounds that they contain. Look for pesticides that are environmentally safe or try to avoid them altogether.

6. Open your windows - On a sunny day, turn off your lights and open your blinds and let the natural light in. If the weather is nice and cool, turn your AC off and open up your windows. Give your utilities a much-needed rest.

7. Sealing the gaps - Go around your home and make sure that any gaps in the windows and doors leading outside are properly sealed. The focus is on efficiency and it's hard to efficiently cool or heat your home while air is leaking in and out.

8. Try Xeriscaping - Xeriscaping is a new form of landscaping that uses indigenous plans and specially designed irrigation to landscape your yard. The local plants respond much better to your local weather and will - once grown out effectively - need much less care and watering to maintain.

There are many, many other ways to reduce your environmental footprint, from recycling to riding your bike to work. Consider some of these options to help keep your home environmentally friendly. And remember, the planet isn't the only thing you're saving. An energy-efficient home costs less to maintain. Increasing the green of your home will eventually increase the green in your wallet.

For Home Remodeling Projects, Always Think In Terms Of Resale

Whether of not you plan to sell your house in the near term, resale value should always be a consideration whenever you are planning out a home remodeling project. In fact, you should be thinking ahead to resale before you even buy a house, because you never know when circumstances will change.

Now, having said that, my opinion on the subject of resale is this. You can either make your house generic to appeal to the masses, or you can make it special so as to appeal to the niche buyer.

If your house is pretty much generic, such as part of a development of similar homes (e.g., tract, PUD, etc.), the sale is mostly driven by price, which is a dicey proposition in a weak housing market. But if your house is unique or special in some way so as to fit the particular preferences of only a handful of niche buyers, they will pay more for it ... although it might take longer to sell if no such targeted buyer happens to be prowling your market at the moment.

A major consideration for you in the project planning stage -- or even before you purchase a home for enhancement and resale in the first place -- is to decide what market you envision for the finished product.

In my experiences performing dozens of remodeling projects on several homes over the past 16 years, some of the houses could be described as your basic California single-story ranch-style home on a flat lot, which in general has pretty broad appeal. However, one house with its reclusive hillside setting and acres of avocado orchards, and another with its two-story farmhouse design and horse facility, each appealed to a much narrower spectrum of buyers.

But contrary to what you might have heard, uniqueness is not necessarily a bad thing. Although it might take longer to sell a home with unique features -- and many prospective buyers indeed will not be willing to pay extra for them (and might not want the house at all because of them) -- that smaller group of targeted buyers who are seeking special amenities (such as a horse barn, tennis court, guest house, or swimming pool) generally will be willing to pay up for them. All things considered, I prefer to make a house somewhat unique and special ... but that doesn't mean crazy, artsy, or eclectic!

Focus on high-value projects

It is important for you to focus on high-value-added projects that are appropriate to your market and neighborhood. Of course, many home upgrades will not return the value invested through enhanced sales price -- although they might be appropriate anyway if you are doing it for your personal enjoyment. Just know in advance why you are doing the project, and don't naively assume that any project you do will give you a dollar-for-dollar increase in home value.

A swimming pool might fit into this category. Many homebuyers have no interest in dealing with a pool. However, if you really want one for your own enjoyment, you still should think ahead toward eventual resale and try to optimize its impact on home value. For example, think about placing and designing the pool in harmony with (and perhaps as a focal point of) your landscaping, i.e., think of it as a clean, soothing, and decorative waterscape, and make it as appealing as possible. The overall feel and marketability of your property will be greatly enhanced versus simply plunking a basic concrete & plaster pool and cool deck in the middle of your yard with a toddler fence around it.

Another example might be an elaborate master bathroom, with huge Jacuzzi tub, sauna, and built-in flat-screen TV. Sure, it might be your dream bathroom, but will it really fit with the rest of the home -- or the rest of the neighborhood for that matter? If you have a top-to-bottom luxury home, it might be completely appropriate, enhancing both your home's value and its appeal to that niche buyer.

Otherwise, consider whether the expense will only turn off the target buyers as an extravagance. If you are in a modest neighborhood of similar homes, be cautious of overdoing the appointments relative to what is common in the neighborhood. Although a tasteful extravagance would probably help the house sell faster, it may not add much to the price. So ask yourself, how much will this project really add to the value of my home?

Also, consider the lifetime cost of an upgrade, especially if you are planning to stay in the house for awhile. As an example, vinyl-covered wood-frame double-pane windows might be desirable for their triple benefit: strength, energy efficiency, and low maintenance.

Plan in Advance! You have heard it many times before: If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. So start by seriously asking yourself questions like these:

  1. What am I trying to accomplish? Am I fixing up the house to sell, or do I just want to create a more pleasant living environment for my family?

  2. Does the house need major repairs that will require permits and contractor involvement, or are these projects that I can tackle myself?

  3. Should I stick to a firm budget, or can I use a flexible checkbook to pursue my vision?

  4. Do I want to immerse myself in this and get it all done as quickly as possible, or do I want to take my time and try not to get stressed out?

In any case, don't spend impulsively or frivolously! This is a trap I have fallen into, since I'm somewhat impulsive by nature. Write out a plan of some kind. It can be dynamic and changeable, but at least you'll have a basis for assigning priorities and making choices.

And keep in mind; many couples end up on the brink of divorce when they take on home projects due to either the mess, the stress, the duration, conflicting ideas, inequitable division of duties, or the financial burden. So be prepared for this before you get yourself knee-deep in it. It might be better to start small and take on each project piecemeal.

Be smart but not cheap. Seek value in your choice of projects, materials, and contractors. Ideally, all of your expenditures will increase the value of your home by at least the same amount -- but of course, there is no telling for sure when it comes to the future market price of the home.

Finally, allow me to leave you with my personal design credo:

Seek simplicity, comfort and value!

Simplicity means muted neutral colors, bright, open, airy, spacious, and uncluttered. Comfort means designing for function, usability, and durability rather than purely for style. And Value means cost-effective quality, i.e., always seeking good quality for a reasonable price.

If you keep this simple phrase in mind, it will go a long ways in helping you to dramatically and affordably transform your house

Builders Can Help With Bathroom Projects

Home improvement television shows are inspiring all of us to pick up a hammer or a glue gun and make our homes showplaces. After all, they make it look so easy on television. It can't be that hard, can it?

Well, in honesty, it can be hard. There's a reason why contractors charge so much. But, don't despair. you can learn how to do it yourself. What it takes is practice. By starting small and tackling smaller projects, you'll gain the confidence and knowledge to go after the bigger projects.

One great place to start is the bathroom. Bathroom renovations are often small projects that have big potential. In fact, the small size of the room will make it less intimidating for you. Replacing tile in a bathroom is less daunting than in the rest of the house.

Of course, many people want to increase their bathroom's size because it is too small. If that's the case in your home, it's okay. It is not all that hard to enlarge the space. Often you can do so by merely taking out a closet or dividing wall. This is not as intimidating as it sounds, as long as you plan for it. (For one thing, make sure it is not a load-bearing wall you are taking out.) Once that closet or wall is gone, you can redesign the space however you wish.

Before you start bashing out walls, do talk to builders and home improvement store staff. They can help you learn how to use various pieces of equipment or figure out an option you had not considered. Also look on the internet and check out community colleges for courses in what you need. There is a lot of information available to help you get the job done. By fulling preparing in advance, you will be more comfortable with what you are doing.

Don't be afraid to hire a builder. It's often better to hire a professional and get a quality job done than try to attempt it on your own. Doing it yourself may just mean more money spent down the road to fix mistakes.

You will also be aware of the costs involved in the project at hand. Home improvement professionals can help you budget the bathroom of your dreams while keeping costs down.

One thing to remember in any home improvement project: work always takes longer than you expect, especially if you work full-time. This is true whether replacing a bathtub or a kitchen island counter. Often a project will take up your nights and weekends, adding tension to your home. Don't worry, it will pass when the work is done, but be sure to be patient.

When you get to the end of your project, not only will you have a nicer bathroom. You may find you've also learning a thing or too: about bathrooms, about home improvement and about yourself.

Being particularly passionate about kitchen cabinet islands, Eric Slarkowski was editing plenty of short articles on this specific topic. You can find his articles on kitchen island counters at http://www.kitchen-cabinets-tips.com and various other sources for kitchen island counter knowledge.

Shower Faucet - Fix it Easy and Fast

So that ominous shower faucet fix has put you in a fix. What are you planning to do about it? Simple, just dig out some high-profile plumbing names from the yellow pages and prepare to part with munificent portions of your hard-earned income. After all, aren't you kind of hamstrung for lack of plausible options?

Not the kind of sentiment that financially astute homeowners or avid do-it-yourselfers would echo. Being a unique breed of customer, they don't exactly bury their head in the sand in ostrich fashion. They believe in dealing with this fly in the ointment head-on with a boatload of patience and very generic household tools.

I think you must take a cue from them

The Wind Back In Your Sails

It's time to let tardy decision making remain a thing of the past. So without letting the fecklessness of previous attempts affecting your morale, let's set sail into uncharted waters. Here's how:

  • No faucet repair, whether in the kitchen or bathroom, can take place without turning off the water supply to the house.
  • Using the commonly used pocket knife take off the cap on the shower handle. You will now be able to see the screw inside.
  • With the help of another banal household tool, the screwdriver, take off the screw, followed by the handle. Make sure all these parts are kept aside safely.
  • The cartridge retaining clip comes off next with the help of a slightly smaller screwdriver. You also need to take off the nut that joins the cartridge to the body of the faucet valve.
  • Reach the root of this niggling problem, the faulty cartridge, with the help of pliers. Check for any visible signs of damage. You'll need to replace the cartridge and also wipe the faucet stem clean.
  • Replace all the parts in the correct order.

Turn on the water, and let the self evident truth bring a gush of happiness into your quiescent existence.

Replacing Shower Faucets - Avoid the Traps - Get Expert Advice

It's the same old story all over again. The drip-drip saga of your shower faucet threatens to rock the boat. Tired of those countless fitful bouts of sleep, you have pulled out all stops in repairing that wretched fixture. But, to no avail. The constant, and now extremely grating leak, has wrecked havoc in your life.

Now before you begin to sound like the protagonist of a Shakespearean tragedy, you better put an end to this Himalayan battle. And how does one achieve that? Does replacing shower faucet sound like a plausible solution? It may be music to the ears of faucet manufacturers and suppliers, but it's the only way you can enjoy the soul-stirring silence of solitudes all over again.

Eight Tips That Attenuate Concerns

But replacing an old shower faucet is not something that one greets exultantly. And the grounds for this kind of trepidation are not that risible too. The possibility of replacement of the valve from behind the wall or through the closet or even a change in the surround is enough to deflate the optimism of a seasoned veteran.

But things are not as complicated as they seem. Here are a few tips that ease your concerns quite a bit:

  • Don't select the new faucet in haste. Remember the saying, size does matter?
  • Be very clear about the measurement of the holes for the fixture. Take the old faucet along when you venture out to purchase the new one.
  • Style is not something you can be utterly cavalier about either. Make sure the new fixture manages to get you out of your blue funk.
  • The instruction manual must be treated like the Holy Grail. Follow it religiously.
  • While dealing with that recalcitrant old faucet, make sure your efforts are ably buttressed by the right tools. So a pipe wrench is used only on pipes.
  • Switching from iron pipes to copper or plastic is a nifty choice since they come without any kind of threading.
  • While bathtubs have a two-valve faucet assembly, a two-valve shower assembly is common place among showers. This means the installation of the faucet is detached from the taps that supply water.
  • However, the internal mechanism of tub and shower faucet assemblies is strikingly similar to those installed in sinks.

With the faucet replaced, you better get used to the silence that resonates from every pore.

Putting God on Trial

I was listening to something interesting the other day when someone mentioned putting God on trial for some of the atrocities in the world. If God is the creator of the universe and all that is, or all that ever will be, how can we put him on trial, he's our creator. We can't put our spiritual master on trial can we, he'll just escape anyway if we convict him, won't he. He's got to be smart enough to break out a prison.

As a child I often thought about God and why he would allow such suffering throughout the world. It never made sense to me when I was child and it still doesn't make sense to me today. Why would the creator, want us to suffer, with even the littlest of problems. Other religions have explained it as if God was teaching us a lesson and that's why we have hardships in our lives.

Do you think God ever went through these hardships? Did God have problems finding a job or gathering some food? Does God even eat? Okay now I'm getting off the topic here,(I wonder what God does eat)... if children do something wrong, most of the time their parents will discipline or correct them. If adults to things wrong, the government will discipline and reprimand them. Sometimes these punishments can be severe. It depends on the crimes committed.

If man has to be put on trial for committing crimes like murder, genocide, and general atrocities towards mankind, should God also be put on trial or is he above man because he's God. I can't imagine the creator of the universe ever being put on trial for man's crimes against humanity or other men, but it seems like someone who is all powerful and all knowing could help his children out of this little mess that we're in today.

Couldn't God help us like we help our children. We as parents might not have all the answers, but we do not claim to have them. We are not all powerful and all knowing, like we would assume God to be. When is God going to help us solve some of our major world problems, like genocide and starvation.

Putting God on trial might not solve all of our problems today but it would be nice to have some help with our problems. If he created us to please him, do we have to go on trial one day, for all the things we did or ignored while we were alive. Something to think about isn't it.

Bathroom Decorating For A Zen Like Spa Look

Bathroom decorating can be fun and challenging but when it ends up giving you the relaxing feeling of a Zen like spa it is well worth the effort. Here are some tips on how you can get this relaxing feel in your bathroom

You should use soft colors and neutral tones colors for your Zen bathroom. Matching colors with your wall paint, towels and shower curtains is key so get paint cards that have your paint colors on them and bring them shopping with you when you buy your bathroom accessories - that way you will get a perfect match.

In the bathroom, consider accessorizing with artwork on the walls, as well as toiletry and toothbrush holders, towel racks, towels and decorative soaps. You want to end up with a minimalist look so don't put too much in. Consider sleek designs for the hamper and wastebasket.

If your bathroom is big enough it could include shoji screens, plants and furniture with simple lines as well as a table water fountain and some bamboo. Window treatments for the Zen bathroom decorating theme should be simple and plain. Try updating your windows with bamboo blinds. Finding Homes Using the Internet - Home Shopping

You can simply type the words real estate or homebuying into any search engine on the World Wide Web and you will come up with hundreds, maybe even thousands of websites that are extremely helpful and full of great information. Like the one you're on right now.

Finding homes with the internet, combined with a skilled real estate salesperson, provides you with the most effective technology available today. Most websites start out, having you select a state you would like to search in and then, select a city, with your price range.

By answering their questions, this narrows the search down to all of the homes available in the area. The internet has made home shopping very simple. Considering what you had to go through in the 1970s. You found a realtor or by looking in the yellow pages, sometimes you found a good realtor and if you are lucky, maybe you would find you a good home.

Most of the time, the first homes you would look at, were owned by the real estate professional you were working with.

There are however a couple of problems with using the internet to find your dream home. Some of the verbage used and photographs taken can create a wonderful illusion of a tropical paradise but the reality, it's a regular home in a decent neighborhood.

Some of these photos are taken by skilled photographers who take advantage of every angle and tend to give an illusion of grander. When you actually start driving around and looking at these homes, only then will you get a reality check, of what the home actually looks like. You'll get used to it.

After you've looked at a few of your future dream homes, you will get a better idea of what I'm talking about with these wonderful pictures and the extraordinary home descriptions like "Beautiful Three Bedroom House with an Ocean View." When reality it's a two-bedroom house with an extra closet for the third bedroom and the ocean is 45 miles away, but you can see it on a clear day if you actually climb to the top of the largest tree on the property.

Take your time when searching for your dream home and don't let any one push you into making a decision if you're not ready. If you find your real estate professional a little too aggressive or pushy, get out of your contract, if you've signed one and find another, more helpful real estate salesperson to help you with your home purchase.

Let's Add a Den

A den addition to your home can be a terrific investment of both time and money. Not only will it increase the value of your home, it will also create a wonderful cozy family gathering place you can enjoy for many years to come.

There are many ways to add a den to your home. One way to add a den is to claim attic space. The use of attic space offers a number of fascinating possibilities ranging from a secluded and cozy retreat to a loft that overlooks the kitchen or great room. A second way to add a den is to consider the basement. Unused space in the basement of your home can also be converted into a very nice den. A third way, which offers unlimited possibilities, is to build an addition to your home for a cozy den.

A den will probably be relatively small (as compared to a family room or great room. You will want to make it cozy and comfortable for your family to use for TV or movie viewing, reading, enjoying music, or just gathering for an evening chat. Creating a feeling of warmth and comfort is generally the goal of den design.

The first questions you will need to answer in deciding where you will add your den and what size the room should be are these:

* Will you convert an existing room?

* Will you renovate your attic?

* Will you finish a space in your basement?

* Will you den be an addition to your existing home?

* If the den will be an addition, where will it join the existing structure?

* What will be the size of the room?

The next set of questions to answer concern access and connection to the rest of the house.

* How will you have access to your new den? Will you be able to use an existing stairway (to attic or basement)? Will you need to add and construct a new stairway?

* How will you connect your new den addition to the existing structure? Will you need to create a doorway or hallway from the existing structure into the new den? Will you remove a wall from your house to connect with the new den?

One very popular approach to den additions is to remove an exterior kitchen wall, allowing the new den to connect with the end of the kitchen. This approach can create a very warm, comfortable and cozy living space for your family. If you choose this option, you will need to decide whether to remove the entire section of wall or to create either a doorway or an arched opening into the den. The use of a smaller doorway to the den will have minimal effect on the look and feel of the kitchen. Building a den addition that is completely open to the kitchen will affect the look and feel of both den and kitchen. This very popular approach to den addition, however, will require careful planning and design.

There was a time when a den was simply a small room that might have built-in bookcases and was probably paneled in wood (Generally knotty pine). Families, builders and contractors have become far more creative in recent years, designing spaces that are far more interesting and functional. Here are some room-design ideas you might want to consider in planning your den.

1. If you are remodeling an attic space, consider creating an open staircase from the floor below and leaving the area that connects with the rest of the house open. Either a half-wall or a wood or wrought iron rail can prevent accidents and create a feeling of more space in both rooms.

2. If you are remodeling a basement space, consider ways you can create the same effect of openness in the way you provide access to your basement den.

3. If you are adding to your home, consider something more creative than a simple doorway to join the den to the existing structure. You might consider placing a see-through fireplace between the kitchen and the den with open space on each side for access. You can connect your den to other rooms in the same way.

4. If you are adding a den that connects with your kitchen, consider using a "breakfast bar" to delineate space. Or, just allow the kitchen and den to flow together.

5. You can create the feeling of warmth in a den through color choices for paint, wallpaper and furniture. Flooring materials can also create very exciting effects. Rather than paneling, you might consider adding the warmth of wood with hardwood floors and open-beam rafters in the den.

If your new den will be an addition to the house, you will need to think carefully about the grade of the land, the appropriate type of foundation, and the external appearance of the new addition. The external materials will certainly need to match or blend with the exterior of the existing house. The line of the new roof will need to be consonant with the existing roof line, and the shingles should match. You can, however, consider some options that will make your home more energy efficient, such as installation of solar energy panels or a skylight. A fireplace could provide alternative heating as well as creating a feeling of warmth in the room. With so many styles of fireplace available, you will certainly be able to find and include a fireplace that accents your den and other rooms with which it connects.

Whether you choose to remodel existing space or to add to your home, you will need to attend to heat and air conditioning in the new den, as well as electricity. This, as well as the need to construct a foundation and exterior walls, may help you decide whether this is a do-it-yourself project or you need to call in professionals for all or part of the work. Many localities require electrical and heat/air work to be done by licensed professionals. If you are building a fireplace, proper ventilation will be critical. You may want to have a professional do these types of work, leaving the paneling or drywall and decorating for you to do.

Whether you choose a simple plan or a very creative and exciting room design, you can create a marvelous living space for your family by adding a den to your existing home. The project will be great fun to plan and build, and you will have a renovation that will improve your lifestyle and increase the value of your home.

Attic Sheeting Water Damage

The Do's and Don'ts of Hardwood Floors

When you finally put in a hardwood floor, you can finally sit back and enjoy the warm beauty that glows from underfoot. There is something almost breathtaking about a finished hardwood floor but it can be completely overwhelming when you stop and think about how you should care for your new home investment.

Let's face it, you can't ask people to not walk on your floor and you definitely can't leave all the furniture out of the room, although that would probably seem like the best solution to the scuff problem. Instead, you should get ready to care for your floors right from the start.

Surprisingly, hardwood floors really don't need too much extra care and most of the overall care comes in with the set up of your furniture instead of on a regular basis.

The Do's of Hardwood Flooring:

There are several do's when it comes to caring for your hardwood flooring and I have outlined them below.

Do use felt contacts and floor pads for your furniture to ensure that it won't scratch the hardwood.

Do sweep your floor regularly with brooms that have soft, fine bristles. Hard bristles may gouge your floors.

Do dust mop your floors on a regular basis. You can do this by having a soft head mop, about 12 to 18 inches in width, and a special dust mop cleaner. Simply spray the mop head and dust the hardwood. No water is necessary.

Do mop with a solution of a neutral pH cleaner and water whenever your floor needs it. Only wash with a damp mop, never swamp a hardwood floor.

Do choose cleaners that are designed for hardwood floors.

Do use floor mats at any entrance to keep dirt from being tracked across your hardwood floors.

Do wipe up any water or liquid that has spilled on your floor as soon as you see it. Moisture can damage your hardwood flooring very quickly.

The Don'ts of Hardwood Flooring:

With every do, there is a don't and obviously some of them have been identified in the do's section of this article but it is still important to look at a few don'ts that we haven't gone over yet.

Don't drag furniture when you move it. This will cause serious damage to your hardwood floors.

Don't use hard and abrasive cleaners on your hardwood floors. Also avoid using any high oil soaps and cleaners.

Don't use a vacuum with a rotating brush. The best type of vacuum to use to remove debris is a canister vacuum with floor attachments.

Don't let dirt and grime build up on your hardwood floors. Dirt works as an abrasive and will begin to cut, dent, scratch and dull your hardwood.

Don't let water collect on your hardwood flooring. Make sure you clean it up immediately. Also, keep dog dishes on a mat, and make sure you dry their paws off when they come inside during the winter or on a rainy day.

Don't expose your hardwood to long periods of direct sunlight. Sunshine will cause fading and discolouring to occur in your hardwood flooring.

If you are aware of all the do's and don'ts of caring for your hardwood floors, you should have beautiful floors for the life of your home. You shouldn't have to refinish your flooring or repair any significant problems with your flooring.

Following a regular cleaning regime with your hardwood is very simple and you will find that you spend only half the time caring for your hardwood that you would caring for a carpet.

Bathroom Remodeling - The Potential Cost

For many people house renovation comes before bathroom remodeling and this part of the house is always overlooked during most renovation projects. People get busy decorating their rooms and try to make them look as lovely as possible. Even the kitchen is usually considered over bathroom and the remodeling of the same mostly remains the last option. It may also happen that people spend so much on room renovations that they are unable to afford to go for bathroom remodeling. But whether you believe it or not, a nicely remodeled bathroom can become the show piece of the whole house or apartment.

In most major cities such as New York bathroom remodeling will depend greatly on the number of bathrooms in a residence and what needs to be done to get the outcome the homeowner requires. A residence having a single bathroom has different needs and accommodation than a residence with more than one bathroom. Hence, a proper look into the nitty-gritty of the same is indeed very much important.

For many New York contractors the average bathroom remodeling project normally requires no more than a week. Remodeling generally calls for designing based on the actual bathroom space, managing the project, specifying the different types of fixtures and the materials to be used. The usual bathroom fixtures mainly include shower faucets, bathroom faucets, and bath faucets. With today's new remodeling fashions you can select various types of these products. Every kind of product is now available on the market. New York contractors provide can source lovely fittings including Jacuzzi, power shower and huge bath tubs if the budget permits.

In some cities such as New York bathroom remodeling is pretty costly but of course it can be solved no matter what your budget with proper planning. Some of the things that can be done to reduce the cost include using flowery or bird shaped pictures or stickers on the tiles of your bathroom and can paint the wooden surfaces such as doors, bath panels and windows of the bathroom. A mirror in a NY bathroom creates an illusion of a bigger bathroom and so it is a must to put up mirror with different colors at the borders or you can simply put frames at the mirror's borders. Bathroom curtains are cheap and using curtains of the same color as the bath will look quite stylish and urban. Many contractors try to understand the customer's requirements first and then will work according to their taste making the place as classy and stylish looking as it can be.

However, you do not need to change everything during your bathroom remodeling, as it would become a very costly affair then. Just by replacing the bathroom taps, towel rail, soap dish and some other accessories will give the bathroom an all over different look. Besides, you should also allot some shelves and cabinets of interesting designs in the bathroom for storage of items like soap, shampoo and other necessary items of daily use. Towel racks should also be given some space and the towels kept on them should be of bright colors.

You can also put up wallpapers of different styles like the rain forest style or bamboo style in your bathroom as it would provide a total different look to your bathroom. Also, if your bathroom has a lot of space, then do think of getting a bathtub or a spa bathtub like those of Victorian designs.

The key in doing bathroom remodeling is to have a definite idea of what you would like it to look like when it is finished and getting a number of estimates as to the cost of having it done. By using simple, less expensive yet effective fixtures you can also save yourself tons of money. You contractor will give you assistance every step of the way.

If you live in New York and are considering bathroom remodeling it is advised that you hire an experienced remodeling contractor. These New York contractors are professionals who will work on your project with speed, efficiency and give you the high quality workmanship you desire. You can find many of these contractors at the Craftsmen Network.

Change Your Thinking About Life

What do I do when I get down and out. Well that use to happen to me often and I seemed to suffer with some minor depression. It would seem like time would stand still. I would look at the clock and notice the time. Let's say 2:23 in the afternoon. I would look back to see what time it was about fifteen minutes latter and it would be 2:26. Wow what in the heck is going on with this clock.

I just couldn't believe it seemed like the day would never end. I would just sit there and think about all the stuff going on in my life, good and bad of course. This seemed to last until I was in my early twenties. I just didn't want to feel like this any more. I made a Conscious design not to get depressed period. I never wanted to feel like that again.

I read a book on ESP and in the book it described visualizing a rose as you went to sleep. I started doing this every night and while I was doing the exercise it seemed to make me feel relaxed in a way I never had felt before. The reason for the exercise was to teach you to visualize something peaceful. This in turn would put you in a peaceful state of mind.

Then a thought came into my noggin. What if when ever I start to feel bad or seem to be going into a sort of depressive state of mind I change my thoughts. It worked... I would start to visualize something else that made me feel comfortable and give me a peaceful feeling. Man was I surprised with my results.

Keep in mind I didn't think of this all on my own but I did put the pieces of the puzzle I needed to together that I needed to change my life. It seemed like I could use this form of self control in different parts of my life. If I was at work and someone made me mad.... Well this didn't work all the time... I still got mad. Let's pick something else OK.

I would worry about something on the job that wasn't going right. Then I would get irritated over something else that wasn't even related to what I was worrying about. Why did I take it out on the other person when what I was really mad about was something else. We do this all the time in our lives. We seem to get mad, get even or give up. Why do we do this and what can we do to stop it.

My main point to all of this is we can change our thinking and change our lives. We can learn new things to change our thinking. We don't need to give up hope that we will always be like this. Change the things you don't like about yourself. Do it today. If you need some help there is a great book that will help you change your life for the better.

You can find it at http://www.live.spiritualideas.com This book has a lot of tools to create the change in your life you want to have a more full filling life.

Most people give up just when they're about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game one foot from a winning touchdown. Ross Perot.

Crawl Space Repairs

The Secret to a Quality Kitchen on a Tight Budget

Sure, that Italian marble and Viking gas range are ideal for any kitchen, but they may not be part of a conservative budget. Even if you cannot afford all of the best imports from around the world, you can still design a space that you will be proud to spend time in.

One of the best ways to spruce up any space is to add a bit of paint. Adding some new hues to the walls inside of your kitchen will brighten up the area, but those cabinets could use a new coat as well. Whether you decide to stain and varnish or use melamine paint, do not neglect your kitchen cabinets.

Another great, and inexpensive, renovation idea is to change up the backsplash a bit. There are numerous new products on the market that are simply a matter of peel and stick. Or, you could branch out into the ceramic subway tile idea, which is also relatively cost effective.

How are those kitchen curtains looking? If yours are grease stained and faded, it may be time for a bit of a curtain facelift. Add a few cafe inspired curtains to your room by mounting a simple panel across the bottom portion of the window. Try to leave the tops bare for a truly authentic look.

While we are on the subject of curtains, why not skip them altogether? Thin wooden blinds often present a cleaner look than any fabric panel can, and they are surprisingly cheap. If you love your current look, toss the existing panels into the wash to bring the color back into the fabric.

Aside from curtains, paint, and a new backsplash, the cabinet and drawer pulls inside of your kitchen may also need some attention. If you have a bit of extra cash to spare, check out some auction sites online for antique pulls. You will be pleasantly surprised at the difference that new hardware makes.

All of these sprucing up tricks and tips are well under that one hundred dollar mark. Yet, these small changes really make a huge difference inside of any kitchen. Replacing all of the cabinet and countertops is a great idea, but these larger projects can be done at a later time.

It does not have to cost a fortune to renovate your kitchen space. All you really need are a few great ideas, some elbow grease, and a bit of inspiration. As soon as you give your kitchen a new look, you will find that whipping up those nightly meals is a lot easier to do.

Stair Lighting Problems

Walking up and down the stairs in the dark could become a safety issue. If the stairs in the house are not that old, there should be a light switch at the top and a light switch at the bottom of the stairway. This is a three way switch and is designed to allow you to turn the stair lighting on as you walk up the stairs and then turn the stair lighting off, once you've safely reached the top of the stairway. And vice versa as she walked down the stairs.

If you don't have a light switch, there are motion sensor lights that are battery operated and can be installed easily in the stairway. These lights can provide you with peace of mind, while protecting your family from accidents.

Stairway accidents are nothing to joke about, I lived in a two-story house with four other people and was the last one to fall down the stairway. None of us got seriously injured and the stairway was built to meet local building codes and was inspected by a building and safety inspector. The stairs were built correctly and the stair lighting was no problem, but people still fell down the stairway and it always happens in the evening.

During the day time there were two windows that let plenty of light into the stairway and in the evening the stairway became quite dark, rarely was the stair lightning ever turned on. This could have been outright laziness but nevertheless, it was rarely used and eventually became a safety issue.

Lighting your stairway might not end all of your problems but it can and some of your problems. There are plenty of stair lighting systems available on the market today and some of the battery operated stair lighting systems can be installed by most homeowners.

Think safety always and do your best to solve your stair lighting problems as soon as possible to prevent injuries or accidents.

Finding Grants for Green Construction

When it comes to new construction techniques, grants are often a way to cut costs. Federal grants for green construction are plentiful with billions literally available.

A federal grant is an award of financial assistance from a Federal agency. It is intended to carry out a public purpose or support or stimulate a purpose that is authorized by a law of the United States. Federal grants can be found and applied for electronically. The site Grants.gov is the central clearing house for Federal Grants.

There are twenty six different agencies that offer over 1,000 grant programs. The grants that apply to green construction are mostly offered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The total amount of grants available exceeds $400 billion dollars. The grants offered by the feds fall into twenty one categories. The categories that have the most impact on green construction are Energy, Environmental Quality, and Health.

Most of the grants are directed toward specific geographical areas. Some of the major concerns of the grants include water quality improvement and the prevention of urban storm water runoff. Many of the grants are connected with the Leeds certification program. Leeds stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a program that is run by the United States Green Building Council and it establishes green construction standards and awards certificates to those that maintain these standards.

Although there are federal grants available, it is on the state and local level that the large majority of grants can be found. The green movement is a grassroots type of thing that appears to be strongest at the local level. Environmental concerns are often very local, and the problems that have been caused by the neglect of the environment are local as well. The pollution of waterways is a good example of this. grant programs exist that are directed at the Great Lakes or at Puget Sound, for example. States that are bordering these waterways usually offers these grants. The idea of environmental impact areas has led to the localities that border or are inside the impact area being the best source of funds for projects that will address the problems.

Private foundations like the Kresage Foundation are among the best sources of green construction grants. The Kresage Foundation has been offering grants under their Green Building Initiative Program. It is specifically geared toward the area of planning and design. While it is true that State, local, and private foundations are the major sources of grants that can be considered pure green building, the federal government is also a source. Research is the key to finding a grant for your project, so take the time to explore the various options mentioned above.

Home Selling Tips - Best Real Estate Advice Ever

One of the most important things to remember when selling your home is to keep it as clean as possible. If you need help or don't have the time to organize your stuff, you can hire a home staging professional in your area. Ask your real estate professional for more information.

1. Remove any clutter from the home and place it in storage. Do not store this stuff on the property if you don't have enough room. Storing clutter in closets or in your garage, will often make these areas look smaller. By removing clutter or even large pieces of furniture, the rooms will look larger.

2. Disconnect yourself emotionally from your home. This is a big problem for people who have lived in their house for long periods of time. If you've raised a family here, the children could have emotional ties also to the home. Some home sellers are looking for someone special to buy their home, if you've got the time and money to wait, you can be selective but be careful, because the longer you wait, the market could go up or down.

3. When your real estate professional is showing the house, it's always a good idea to leave the home until the potential homebuyers are gone. One example of this would be if you were in a bad mood or didn't have a good day and were a little upset at the world. Your mood could cause potential homebuyers to lose interest in the property. I've seen this more than once.

4. Make sure everything is operating properly. This would include doors, door knobs, windows, kitchen appliances, garage door openers, cabinet drawers, bathroom fixtures, toilets, faucets, lights, switches, electrical outlets and anything else that moves, slides, turns or rotates that is part of the home.

5. The Interior and exterior walls of the home should be in good shape. Make sure there's no termite damage, wood rot, peeling paint, broken windows or holes in the walls.

6. Make sure the flooring is in good shape. Some real estate professionals will suggest, replacing the carpeting with a neutral color. This method often works pretty good but I have seen plenty of homes that were re-carpeted and after the home was purchased the carpeting was replaced again, by the new owners. Just make sure the flooring is in good shape.

7. Here's a trick that definitely works a little magic when selling a home. Leave some cookies or a nice fruit bowl on the dining room table. There is no need to leave a sign that says "Eat Me". It gives the home a warm feeling, almost like a country atmosphere.

8. Even better than home selling tip number seven would be baking some cookies just before the perspective buyers arrive, it's not the cookies, it's the smell from the cookies that most people cannot resist.

These are just a few home selling tips but the most important is to keep the inside and outside of the home clean.

Affordable and Sustainable DIY Earthbag Homes

Earthbag building (sometimes called sandbag building) is surely one of the lowest cost, most practical building methods. First used by the military for building durable, bullet and blast resistant structures, this building method has recently experienced a surge of interest among do-it-yourself builders. There are now an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 earthbag structures, including homes, offices, shops, schools, temples, clinics, orphanages and even ecovillages.

One of the strongest selling points is affordability. A simple earthbag dome, for example, using recycled grain bags and earth can be built for around $100. A larger, more comfortable home can be built for around $500-$1000. The EarthDome House at Terrasante Village in Tucson, Arizona is just one example.

Earthbags are ideal for owner-builders. The necessary skills for each step of construction can be learned in a few minutes. It boils down to simply filling bags with an appropriate fill material (typically subsoil or gravel) and tamping them solid. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Also, few tools are required - shovels, buckets, garden hose. The few additional tools needed (tamper, slider) can be made cheaply and easily.

Earthbag buildings are sustainable since they are made primarily of earth from or near the building site. Earthbag domes do not require wood, thereby reducing pressure on our forests. Expensive concrete foundations are not required if you use gravel-filled bags. In addition, these structures are safe, quiet, nontoxic, rodent proof, and fire, hurricane and flood resistant.

Energy efficiency is another strong plus in favor of building with bags. The massive earth walls stabilize interior temperatures in hot climates. In cold and hot climates, earthbags can be filled with an insulating material, such as lava rock, pumice, vermiculite or perlite. Some builders are experimenting with rice hulls for insulation, which are often free for the taking. In general, lightweight insulating materials (such as those just mentioned) require far less labor than those of tamped earth and provide comfort through the harshest winters or hottest summers.

Earthbags can also be used to create underground (root/storm cellars, etc.) or earth-bermed structures, privacy and retaining walls, planters, furniture (built-in benches, etc.), and many other uses. Earthbags are very adaptable and work just as well for domes as they do for structures with vertical walls. They also excel at creating free-form, curving structures.

As earthbag building grows by leaps and bounds, NGOs and other organizations are exploring their use for emergency shelters. Millions of victims of wars and natural disasters need low cost housing and temporary shelter. More durable than tarps and more comfortable than tents, earthbags work perfectly since even unskilled workers can build their own shelters - all without destroying local resources.

Owen Geiger (Director of the Geiger Research Institute of Sustainable Building at http://www.GRISB.org) has recently co-authored http://www.EarthbagBuilding.com to better focus and keep track of the rapid growth of this novel building method.

Wood Block With Abs Pipe

Installing a 32 Inch Back Door

In some older houses you will find a 30 inch back door. Have you ever tried to move a refrigerator or some large furniture through a 30 inch door? Keep in mind most bedroom doors are 30 inches wide and are in 36 inch hallways. 30 inch doors and bedrooms make it tough to move some furniture in too.

Let's start with the price difference between a 30 inch door and a 32 inch door. The cost difference is usually going to be around $20. If you are building a hundred homes this could become quite an additional expense. So we can understand why the home builder installed a 30 inch door in the back of our home.

He got the extra money in his pocket, you got a headache.

Here's the big problem. If you ever want to install a larger door you will need to replace the structural door framing. Now this is where you could run into a little bit of an expense. Changing the framing for a wider door could become quite costly. It could actually cost over $1000 in some cases.

Now if the homebuilder would have originally installed a 32 inch door in your house it might have ran him as high as an additional $45. How can this be? I will give you the first clue. There is a good chance the homebuilder will not be moving into any of these houses. If for some strange instance he did move into the house, he would learn the same lesson whenever he needed to move a large item into the house.

I'm a contactor and learned this lesson in a long time ago.

If you are building a new home you might even want to consider installing a 36 inch back door. This door will give you plenty of room when it comes to moving large items in or out of your house. The cost difference between a 36 inch door and a 32 inch door is usually around $20 also.

When building a new home most people don't give very much thought about their interior or exterior doors. Here's a simple chart I made to help with some basic door decisions.

Bathroom Doors Should Be 28 Inches Wide Minimum.
Bedroom Doors Should Be 30 Inches Wide Minimum.
Front Doors Should Be At Least 36 Inches Wide
Back Doors and Garage Doors Should Be At Least 32 Inches Wide

If you are a professional football or basketball player don't use these numbers above.

If you have large sliding glass doors or French doors throughout your home and can use them to move large items into the house you can install whatever size doors you choose that are comfortable to walk through.

Give some thought when installing a new door on your next project and keep some of the above tips in mind..

If you are designing a home give some thought to the stairways and hallways in the home as well.

Your Royal Stairway - How to Achieve One

More often than not, most items found in your home serve primarily the purpose of decoration. Take your vases, paintings, and carvings, among others, as examples. However, some items serve for particular functions but may also serve as a decoration. Take your crystal chandelier (it is primarily to give light to your home but also serves as dcor to your ceilings) and your antique mirror for instance.

One thing that is not actually furniture which can be both useful and decorative in function is the stairway. Oftentimes, they serve as pathways from one level of our house to the next. Obviously, this is really a great help in houses with two or more floors. There are also houses which opt to put a stairway's platform in direct vision of a person entering the house from a front door. It gives out this appealing impression. Given this, it is therefore necessary that a stairway is not only sturdy and secure (for purposes of safety) but also must demonstrate "grandiosity" in its own right. Usually, this is attributed to the entire design of the stairway, but can also be tracked down to the specific stair parts, too. You have to remember that even the smallest detail, in this case part, can affect the totality of a whole structure to function and serve its purpose. This goes the same for the stairway and its stair parts.

A stairway may be built in different fashions. It can be helical, straight, or sectioned with a balcony. These final structures usually depend more or less on the materials used for the stair parts. Colossal mansions and castles usually have marble staircases of regal grace and elegance. Suburban homes have staircases of wood. For high buildings and skyscrapers, they have cemented or stone-made staircases. There are also some which have more than two or more materials mixed.

Some stair parts may be made of wood, while the others with cement or steel or other materials. For example, the steps are made of cement, the balusters from steel and the handrail from wood. However, when a staircase is made of marble, it is almost always the only material used for its stair parts, too. Oftentimes, the color of these stairways is usually the same with the rest of the house. This is because a stairway is a part of the entirety of the structure of the house.

There are various designs and materials of stair parts which when combined properly may produce a great look for the stairways. The general consideration is on the structure of your home. Also, consideration is also given to your budget to achieve the one which you like and is fit for your home. Most construction stores and depots offer various stair parts with affordable and reasonable prices.

Stairways, just like any general structures, rely greatly on their stair parts to achieve the final look to be visually stimulating to your guests and visitors and also for its solidity. Be certain that you only get what is best for your stairway to produce the effect of a royal pathway, to the next floor that is.
